- A meta tag title may contain 80 characters max, only 65 get displayed, it is also recommended to be 65 or less.
- A meta tag description can contain up to 500 characters but is not recommended and a lot of website building software only let you put 300 at max, the recommended amount of characters for the description tag is 165 characters or less.
- Meta tag keywords may contain up to 1000 characters, these do not show on google search results. They are just used to better define searches like when someone searches with typos in there phrase, well here you want to enter all those possible typos.
Meta Tag Title - This is the very first thing any given person sees when there search results show up. In the image below the top bold blue title tag that says "Giorgio Valenti - Designer Discounters", this is 1 of 289 pages that are on one of my websites. Do not use Stop characters in the Meta Tag Title like...... and,but,or,by,for,why,a...... Also avoid using special characters, the only ones I use and find they do not cause errors is the "- and |". see image below
You want to enter keywords here that are most searched for the items you are selling. Google offers a wonderful Analytics program, you enter all the keywords for your page and Google gives you a break down of the words most searched and the combinations that are searched the most, this is nice because you can just copy and paste based on search results from consumers.
Meta Tag Description - Now you have caught your customers attention, they now read the description tag to make sure the site is gonna be relevant to fit there needs. Keep this area direct and to the point, you don't want your customer to get the feeling your trying too hard, just keep it simple, also make sure you just focus on that page. Remember the audience searched for what they are looking for, you want to grab there attention about that item, they will see the rest of your website once they click. A good example of keeping it simple is Google, they are so popular because people don't have to deal with all the clutter in there search results.
You may also want to display your websites sales, promotions, etc. or anything you feel may be engaging to your search audience. You can use any and all characters in this area, refrain from ALL CAPS which is annoying and frowned upon by Google, also refrain from using repetitive special characters.
Meta Tag Keywords - Keyword tags is an area where you can fill in anything you want that you feel a customer may type. There is a lot of talk about whether search engines still use keywords, from my experience they absolutely do. I have tested numerous times across 2 of my websites and found that they are definitely looked at and they especially matter with typos the search audience may enter. This area is critical for the fact that people can enter so many possibilities of search terms that you want to enter all those possibilities here. Keywords are not displayed anywhere to the normal user so it is a good place to catch the typos.
